Samuel Fleischacker

Dr. Samuel Fleischaker is an LAS Distinguished Professor and Placement Committee Chair in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Illinois Chicago. Dr. Fleischaker earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Yale University. Dr. Fleischaker's research interests revolve around many unique topics in moral, religious, and political philosophy such as the nature and history of liberalism, the relationship between moral philosophy and social science, and the relationship between moral and religious values. Dr. Fleischaker has contributed significantly to the field of philosophy through his numerous books, academic papers, and book edits. Dr. Fleischaker's books include Being Me Being You: Adam Smith and Empathy, The Good & The Good Book, The Ethics of Culture, Integrity and Moral Relativism, A Short History of Distributive Justice, and more. Dr. Fleischaker also edited the book Heidegger’s Jewish Followers: Essays on Hannah Arendt, Leo Strauss, Hans Jonas, and Emmanuel Levinas. Dr Fleischaker has also published journal articles in academic journals such as William and Mary Quarterly, and De Gruyter. Dr. Fleischacker has been a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, the University Center for Human Values at Princeton, and the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities at Edinburgh University. Before teaching at the University of Illinois Chicago, Dr. Fleischaker taught at Haverford College as an Assistant Professor, and at Williams College as an Associate Professor of Philosophy.
